Yes, Adults Get Lice Too — Here's What to Do | Two Nice Lice Ladies DC
Most of the conversation about lice focuses on children, which makes sense — kids are in the highest-risk environments. But adults get lice too. And in our experience, the adults most likely to get lice are the parents of the children who already have it.
How Adults Get Lice
The transmission mechanism is identical: direct, head-to-head contact. For parents, this happens more than you might think.
• Hugging and comforting a child with active lice
• Sharing a pillow or bed with an affected child
• Bending close to check your child's hair without knowing what you're looking for
• Leaning in for a selfie, a bedtime story, or a movie on the couch
Many parents discover they have lice only after treating their children — and after spending significant time in close contact with them during and after treatment.
Symptoms in Adults
Adult lice cases can be trickier to recognize. The hallmark symptom is persistent scalp itching — but this may take several weeks to develop after initial infestation, because itching is caused by a sensitivity to lice saliva that builds over time. Many people, adults especially, carry an infestation for weeks without noticeable itching.
Other signs to watch for:
• A tickling or crawling sensation on the scalp
• Small red bumps or sores on the scalp, neck, or shoulders from scratching
• Visible nits (oval specks) on hair shafts, particularly near the scalp
• Difficulty sleeping — lice are slightly more active in the dark
How Adult Treatment Works
Adult lice cases are treated identically to children's cases. Our FloSonix heat-activated treatment works on adults exactly as it does on children — it is a physical process (thermal desiccation) and is not affected by hair thickness, hair length, or age.
One important note: adults with very thick or very long hair may require a longer treatment session to ensure complete coverage. We account for this during your appointment.
The Check Both Parents Rule
This is one of our most important pieces of guidance: when lice is found in a household, every parent should be checked. Every time. We cannot tell you how many times we have heard moms and dads tell us that they got their child treated, didn’t get themselves checked, and then two weeks later, they’re back at the clinic getting a treatment because their lice was missed. This doesn’t happen with us as we check the WHOLE household, no matter what.
Our whole-household visit checks everyone. This is not optional — it is the single most important step in actually resolving the situation rather than managing a recurring cycle.
